With respect to Nettles—Ἀκαλήφη is the name given by the Attic writers to a plant which is herbaceous and which produces itching. Aristophanes says, in his Phœnissæ, that pot-herbs were the first things which grew out of the earth; and after them the rough stinging-nettles.
